Bachelor of Science in Applied Health Care – Level 7

A new route to a third-level degree at Carlow Institute

This degree is designed to enable students to develop as self-aware, reflective graduates who are confident practitioners able to integrate and use their knowledge, skills and attitudes in a variety of health care situations and contexts by applying best practice.

Complete the first year of the three-year degree at Carlow Institute of Further Education and Training, followed by one year at South East Technological University (SETU) Waterford Campus.

This degree will give you the opportunity to access a third-level degree without any requirement for a CAO application.

Students will be registered with SETU from Year 1 and will have access to the full range of services available to all SETU students. Transport from Carlow to SETU Waterford will be provided in Year 1 for cross-campus activities. Year 2 and Year 3 of the degree course will take place in SETU Waterford.

Kilkenny and Carlow Education and Training Board (KCETB) and SETU are co-delivering this innovative Unified Tertiary Project at Carlow Institute and SETU Waterford.

 

Successfully completing all aspects of this Level 7 BSc in Applied Healthcare allows you the option to apply for an add-on year which is a Level 8 BSc (Hons) in Applied Healthcare (WD005 AHC). This will allow you to access post-graduate MSc programs in England within health care.

Entry Requirements / Elligibility

Those wishing to apply to the degree should meet the following minimum entry criteria:

  • 5 subjects O6/H7; English or Irish O6/H7; Mathematics O6/H7 or
  • Level 5 major award or equivalent.
  • If you are aged 23 or over and do not meet the minimum entry requirement, your application will be assessed based on merit. We will take into account your life experience, work or community experience.

If your first language is not English, B2 standard is required (or equivalent) on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in writing, reading, listening and speaking. Evidence of achievement of this standard is necessary for entry to the degree.

KCETB and SETU’s Unified Tertiary Programmes aim to encourage the participation and success of students from sections of society including those under-represented in higher education, by offering degree programmes at a local level. We welcome students from all sections of society especially those under-represented in higher education.

Fees

  • There are no registration fees for the first year of the programme, which will be delivered in Carlow Institute. Students may be eligible to apply to SUSI for a grant to cover fees for Years 2 and 3.
