SUSI PLC Maintenance Grant Scheme

These means-tested maintenance grants are available to eligible students attending approved full-time courses of further education, in approved Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) centres. Applications are made online to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) through

Back to Education Allowance (BTEA)

The Back to Education Allowance allows those in receipt of certain social welfare payments to retain payments whilst participating in approved full-time further education and training courses. See or for further details.

Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS)

This scheme allows unemployed people aged over 21 to participate in education and training without losing their benefits. Students eligible for an available place on the scheme continue to receive their Social Welfare entitlements plus the cost of some books, lunch and travel expenses (where applicable).

It applies to all courses offered at Carlow Institute of Further Education and Training and, to qualify applicants must be in receipt of one of a number of social welfare supports for at least six months.

Fund for Students with Disabilities

The Fund for Students with Disabilities allocates funding to Further and Higher education colleges for the provision of services and supports to students with disabilities. Applications to the fund are made on behalf of an eligible student by Carlow Institute following an assessment. See Open Learning and Students with Additional Needs for more information.
